How can an insurance agent separate from the herd?

Many field managers will tell a new agent that they must find a way to distinguish themselves with potential customers in order to get them to buy.  Many agents come up with zany or crazy ways to get the attention of potential customers?

Is that really necessary?  Do we have to create an image like the beer commercials to get noticed? Isn't making a commitment to take care of your customer enough?  If we do not draw attention to ourselves, how will we get noticed?

  1. I believe we can get noticed in two very important and obvious ways. First and foremost we must maintain the highest level of sincerity and integrity. I would say there are people who don't like insurance agents because they unfortunately ran across an agent that had neither. You cannot survive in this business without them.

Secondly, the insurance business is a relationship business. If you concentrate on building a relationship with as many people as you can meet, your business will prosper...in time. The most successful insurance agents I know built their practices like a contractor who builds a skyscraper. Each brick represents a relationship and each floor represents another layer of clients built through referrals until they have a complete "building".

Like a contractor who uses quality building materials to construct a building, an agents sincerity and integrity lays the foundation of their practice...having a great work ethic doesn't hurt either.

I will close with a statement a very good friend of mine told me when I asked him how he was able to be the number one salesman thirteen years in a row. He did not work for an insurance company but what he told me holds true for any salesperson. He told me to never chase the money but always chase the relationship. If you can develop the relationship, the money will come...and you just might make a few life long friends to boot.
